Create a WBL Plan
Create a Work-Based Learning plan from scratch or using a template. This guide walks you through every step from selecting a student to defining competencies.
1. Choose Your Method
You can create a plan in two ways: manually from scratch on the Plans tab, or by clicking 'Use Template' on an existing template record. Templates are the most efficient way to manage repetitive plan setups.
Navigate to the WBL Plans page
Click 'Create Plan' for manual creation, or go to Templates tab and click 'Use Template'
2. Select Student & Guardian
Select the student for whom the plan is being created. Then select a parent or guardian from the student's assigned guardians. Assigning guardians here is crucial because, when a plan is ready for digital signature, email invitations are sent specifically to the selected guardians.
Select the student from the dropdown
Select a parent or guardian
Verify the guardian's email is correct for signature invitations
3. Assign a Coordinator
Assign a coordinator who will oversee this plan. The current user is auto-assigned as coordinator by default, but you can change this to another staff member if needed.
Confirm or change the coordinator assignment
Ensure the coordinator has the appropriate permissions
4. Select Industry Partner & Supervisor
Select the industry partner and the supervisor who will oversee the student at the workplace. If the partner doesn't exist yet, you'll need to add them first via the Industry Partners tab.
Select the industry partner
Select the supervisor from the partner's supervisor list
If no partner exists, add one first via Industry Partners tab
5. Choose the Work Location
If the selected industry partner has multiple work locations, you will be prompted to choose the specific site where the student will be working.
Select the appropriate work location from the available sites
Verify the address is correct
6. Define Competencies & Expectations
Define the competencies the student will work toward. If the plan is CTE-required, the competency picker integrates with the Indiana NLPS 2025-26 standards. You can also set expectations, schedules, and start/end dates.
Add competencies (Employability, CTE, or Technical)
For CTE plans, select from the Indiana NLPS standards picker
Set start and end dates
Define the schedule and expectations
7. Review & Create
Review all the plan details before creating. Once created, the plan will be in 'Draft' status. You can edit it until it's submitted for signatures.
Review student, guardian, coordinator, partner, and location
Verify competencies and dates
Click 'Create Plan' to finalize
